As BBC reports, Mr Gascoigne’s representatives confirmed that he had died at his home in Richmond, following a short illness.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Christina.

Gascoigne gained fame for presenting University Challenge from 1962 until 1987. He developed a number of catchphrases that continue to be used by his successor Jeremy Paxman.

His catchphrases included “Fingers on buzzers,” and “Your starter for 10”.

Since the news of his death was announced, many have shared tributes to Gascoigne on social media.

University Challenge alumni Bobby Seagull tweeted: “Farewell Bamber Gascoigne. The OG host of #UniversityChallenge. He was host 1962-87 and set the tone for one of the best UK TV quiz shows. Scholarly, gentle and yet commanding, he joins the pantheon of great gameshow hosts. We shall miss you. RIP Bamber.”
