Two Irish Citizens Injured In Istanbul Suicide Bombing

Ellen Tannam

Irish citizens going to Turkey have been told to exercise extreme caution by the Department of Foreign Affairs as the ‘threat of terrorism remains extremely high’ following a suicide bomb attack earlier today which killed five and injured 36.

Two of the injured are Irish, according to local health officials, report RTÉ News.

The attack has been linked to Kurdish militants in the area and was carried out in a big tourist and shopping area in the popular Turkish city.

Armed police have sealed off the street where 6 ambulances gathered to tend to the injured.

There were fewer people on Istiklal Street where the attack happened due an atmosphere of fear following a series of bombs in the city.

Seven of those injured are in a serious condition.

A suicide car bombing killed 37 in Ankara this month, with a similar one killing 29 earlier in March.

A suicide bomber killed 10 people in Istanbul in January.
