Tributes paid to medical student who died in Co Kerry car accident

Sarah McKenna Barry

The collision occurred on Monday.

Tributes are pouring in for Neila Scheeres, a 24 year-old Canadian woman who was killed in a car accident earlier this week.

Neila, who was studying medicine at UL’s Graduate Entry Medical School, died when her car collided with a truck at the N69 at Pope’s Cross, which is just outside Tralee, on Monday afternoon.

Neila was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries in the collision.

It’s been reported that the young woman was returning from her first day of placement at a medical centre in Kerry.

Professor Kerstin May, who is UL’s president, led the tributes to the young Ontario woman.

She said: “It is my sad duty once again this week to make you aware of the heart-breaking passing of another cherished member of our community Nelia Scheeres, from Canada who was a Year 3 BMBS student of the School of Medicine.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Nelia’s family especially to her parents Jan (Jaco) and Madine, her sister and fellow BMBS student Christi, her brother Ian and to her extended family and friends and fellow UL students.”

Flowers have been left on the site where the collision took place, and other tributes have come in.

The Irish Mirror reports that a close friend of the medical student described her as “a perfect person”.

They said: “She was incredible, loving, selfless, beautiful inside and out. We’re all completely devastated from this news. Prayers for her family.”

Another local said: “She was friendly to everyone she met and never looked down on anybody – she would have made a perfect doctor.”

Gardaí are continuing to appeal to any witnesses to the collision, and have urged them to come forward with any information relating to the crash.
