Travellers living in an unofficial halting site in Co.Louth were advised to place their children in foster care to help them find alternative accommodation.
According to The Irish Times, families with an address at Woodland Park, Dundalk, were provided with this option by an official at Louth council offices earlier this week.
A spokesperson for the families, Rebecca Quinn, said: “We have heard reports of these kinds of intimidating suggestions being put to Travellers in Co Louth since the evictions and even before.
“This is an ongoing issue. It has been said to Travellers that if they declare themselves homeless the children could be taken away. These threats to break up families are not acceptable”.
The Irish Times reports that 23 families have been evicted from Woodland Park since Friday 15th January on health and safety grounds.
