For many it will come as no surprise that Giovanni Trapattoni and the Football Association of Ireland have decided to go their separate ways.
The news comes after Ireland’s 1-0 defeat to Austria last night, a result that leaves their hopes of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in tatters.
The decision, brought in with immediate effect, was reached by “mutual consent” and will see the departure of both Trapattoni and his assistant Marco Tardelli.
Trapattoni and Tardelli are out the door as of this morning.
In a statement released earlier today, Trapattoni said: “I want to thank everyone in Ireland who has given us their support during our time here which has always meant a lot to us.
“We leave this country with emotion because we understand the Irish supporters who have a well-deserved international reputation and they have our utmost respect.”
The Italian also thanked the FAI but, as is expected in the world of football, the topic of discussion has already moved on to his replacement.
Martin O’Neill and former Republic of Ireland Captain Roy Keane are just two of the names in the frame to take up the position.
