A 15-year-old girl is in critical condition in University Hospital Waterford, following a freak accident at Hook Head this afternoon.

Four friends were reportedly swept into the water from the rocks at roughly 2pm this afternoon.

While two of the party managed to make their way back on to shore, the other two were rescued from the water by an Irish Coastguard helicopter.

Two RNLI lifeboats were also dispatched to the scene.

According to The Independent, the rescued teens had managed to cling to each other and were rescued close to where their friends were standing onshore.

The duo were treated for hypothermia and one is understood to be stable.

The girl, however, who was reportedly unconscious when rescued, is said to be in critical condition.
