Following The Labour Party’s recent announcement of a drafted bill to repeal the 8th amendment, Enda Kenny informed Fine Gael TDs of a major change to their abortion policy last night.
Kenny stated that the issue of abortion would most likely be brought in front of a Citizen’s Convention similar to how the Marriage Equality referendum was approved by the CCVEN in April 2013.
The Taoiseach announced that the party would have a free vote on any future changes to abortion laws, so would be free to decide based on their own beliefs, rather than be subject to a party whip.
He also announced that the party would not be campaigning directly to repeal the law, as it is a ‘complex and sensitive issue.’
Dramatic move by Enda Kenny re abortion laws free vote, but still no commitment to hold a referendum #repealthe8th https://t.co/13aLyf74DD
