Sustainable Healthcare: Teledermatology reduces emissions by 236 metric tonnes

Hi-tech teledermatology treatments have led to a significant reduction in climate-damaging greenhouse gas emissions, cutting an estimated 236 metric tonnes

The report highlights that AllView Healthcare’s use of advanced imaging technology to diagnose and treat skin conditions, such as cancer, without requiring patients to visit a consultant in person, has resulted in "a substantial saving on greenhouse gas emissions over the last two years".

By eliminating the need for physical appointments, AllView Healthcare has achieved several environmental benefits:

• Patients save on travel, reducing fuel consumption and emissions
• Less physical space is required for consulting rooms
• Decreased use of gas, electricity, and water
• Reduced staff travel costs

The report found that urban patients typically face a 24.4km round trip to their nearest hospital, while rural patients average a 65.5km round trip. The reduction in travel has been substantial, with the report noting: “We calculated the approximate kilometres saved to be 713,005, which equates to over 236 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions.”

AllView Healthcare, the nation’s leading provider of teledermatology services, has seen over 25,000 patients in the past two years. Their collaboration with VHI has significantly shortened dermatology waiting lists, which stand at 48,000, by providing rapid access to treatment.

Maynooth University’s evaluation of AllView Healthcare’s practices confirmed the environmental benefits of teledermatology. Researchers concluded: “Telemedicine reduces carbon emissions by reducing the number of physical appointments in the health system. 

These appointments now take place through a digital platform, resulting in significant savings for both patients and the environment.”
