Meriam Ibrahim, a woman who is facing execution in Sudan for marrying a Christian, gave birth to a baby girl in prison today.
According to the Daily Mail, the baby girl was born in the hospital wing at Omdurman Federal Women’s Prison in North Khartoum.
Meriam was sentenced to death for marrying a Christian earlier this month by a Sudanese court. She was found guilty of converting to Christianity due to the fact that her father was a Muslim.
She is also supposed to receive 100 lashes before she is executed as her marriage is considered void by the government.
Although a judge has announced that she can be spared if she renounced her faith, Meriam has refused to change her religion.
Meriam is also solely responsible for the care of her husband who is in a wheelchair. She also has her 20 month old child in prison with her.
Her lawyer is currently appealing the case and a petition asking for the release of Meriam has reached over 600,00 signatures.
