Simon Harris has confirmed that student nurses will be paid for their work during the Covid-19 crisis.
This evening, the Minister for Health said that students nurses and midwives will be offered contracts as Healthcare Assistants.
In recent days, students have been sharing their experiences, telling stories of how they have lost accommodation with others unable to pay rent.
Many have feared that they would not complete their courses but Mr Harris has said this new measure will ensure they can continue with their studies.
He also spoke of how the healthcare profession has shown “immense leadership” and he will do everything he can to support them at such a difficult time for the country.
Student nurses and midwives are invited to apply online through HSE.ie/oncall.
This evening, the Dáil will pause at 8 pm as people around the country are asked to appreciate Ireland health workers, in a round of applause.
While taking into account social distancing guidelines, people are invited to join in from their homes as a show of support and solidarity for Irish healthcare workers.
Dáil has agreed to HSE proposal to applaud frontline health and shop workers at 8pm tonight.
