Storm Éowyn: Schools across Ireland to close on Friday

A red weather warning has been issued ahead of Storm Éowyn

Schools across Ireland are set to close ahead of Storm Éowyn on Friday. The news comes after Met Éireann issued a red weather warning for most of the country on Wednesday.

According to the National Emergency Coordination Group, schools will be closed in Status Red areas on Friday, January 24th.

The group met today and decided that “schools, early learning and childcare settings and further and higher education institutions in red level warning areas will close for the duration of the red warning.”

They added, “A status red severe weather warning means ‘shelter in place’. People in the areas affected by red warnings should stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take action to protect themselves and their properties.”

The public has been warned against leaving their homes on Friday unless it is essential.

“Only emergency service workers should be leaving home for work, where directed by their employer. Widespread disruption to public and other services is to be anticipated.”

Met Éireann confirmed a Status Red weather warning for 22 out of 26 counties in the Republic of Ireland.

The warning applies to Cavan, Clare, Cork, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Kerry, Kildare, Laois, Leitrim, Limerick, and Longford.

A Status Red warning has also been issued for Louth, Mayo, Meath, Monaghan, Offaly, and Roscommon.

Sligo, Tipperary, Westmeath, and Wicklow are also included under the Status Red warning.

Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, and Wexford have not been issued a Status Red warning yet.
