The presidential election has been confirmed for October 26.

In two months time, the Irish electorate will vote on who they want to be the next president of Ireland.

Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy confirmed the date this morning, saying that a formal order for the election will be signed later on today.

Speaking on RTE’s Today with Miriam, he said that people have until September 26 to submit their nominations. The election will then take place one month later.

Candidates seeking a nomination to contest the election need to have the support of four local authorities, or the backing of 20 members of the Oireachtas to move forward in the race.

Those who have already announced their intention to run for president include journalist Gemma O’Doherty, Dragons’ Den‘s Gavin Duffy, and founder of Pieta House, Joan Freeman.

Two referendums will also take place on October 26, the same day as the presidential election.

One vote will ask the electorate if they want to remove the constitution’s blasphemy offence law.

The other will ask if they want to remove the constitution’s reference to women in the home.
