If you were hoping to spend the May Bank Holiday enjoying some good weather, we have some bad news for you.

Met Éireann is predicting that the weekend will bring widespread rain and thundery downpours, although conditions will start to improve by Monday.

According to forecasters, rain in the southwest of the country will become more persistent on Friday night and will start to spread north, with lowest temperatures between two to six degrees in a freshening easterly wind.

By Saturday, there will be widespread rain, which will turn heavy at times in pasts of the south and southeast. It was also be a breezy day, with highest temperatures between eight and 13 degrees.

Rain will continue overnight and while it will clear away on Sunday morning, heavy and thundery showers will later set in and strong downpours are likely.

“Winds will be light to moderate mainly southerly and temperatures will be much milder than of late with highs of 11 to 16 degrees. The showers will gradually ease off overnight and temperatures will fall back to between 5 and 7 degrees. At the moment, it looks like it will stay largely dry on Bank Holiday Monday with highs of 11 to 15 degrees,” they said.
