The Eiffel Tower has been lit up for the first time since Friday’s attack – sporting the national colours of red, white and blue.

The landmark has been shadowed in darkness since the terrorist attacks over the weekend as a mark of respect to the 129 lives lost in the French capital.

The tower’s usual light display was replaced this evening in a united front for the French citizens as a reminder of the country’s support for those affected by the mindless violence.

Twitter users marked the occasion with a series of tweets documenting the moment the lights got turned back on this evening:

The area around the landmark which usually receives between 15,000 and 20,000 visitors a day was evacuated Saturday as heavily armed police entered the nearby Pullman hotel.

The scenes from Paris come as the book of condolences was opened this morning at the French Embassy on Merrion Square.
