Melissa Reid could be released from Peruvian jail, authorities in the country have said.

In 2013, she was jailed, along with Irish woman Michaella McCollum, for trying to smuggle drugs out of Peru. And now, after over two years in prison she could be released.

According to the BBC, Peruvian authorities have agreed to expel her from the country after a court hearing on Friday. She has complied with measures to meet the legal requirement for release.

UK’s Foreign Office released this statement: “We continue to provide assistance to Melissa Reid, and remain in contact with her family and local authorities.”

This latest development follows McCollum’s release from prison last month after serving two years and three months in prison.

The two girls were caught trying to smuggle an estimated £1.5m of cocaine from Peru back to Spain on August 6th, 2013.
