Muireann O’Connell was stunned by the horrific comments online about Natasha O’Brien

Ireland AM host Muireann O’Connell has defended Natasha O’Brien following her appearance on the show.

The presenter admitted she was stunned to see the waves of trolling Natasha O’Brien was facing after she appeared on the show this week.

Natasha spoke eloquently about her experience on the show on Monday morning.

Her supporters praised her for speaking about violence against women and the ruling during her interview.

However, Natasha was also met with waves of abuse online after the appearance.

Muireann called the trolls out after she was made aware of the cruel remarks.

“We had the wonderful Natasha O’Brien on this morning, who very kindly agreed to talk to us about her feelings since the person who assaulted her had his suspended sentence overturned,” Muireann said.

“She was incredibly thoughtful in that interview, even talking about how guilty she felt now that he has to go to jail, because she knows that it’s not a good place,” she continued.

Muireann said she doesn’t use TikTok but she was sent some comments.

“Bloody hell, I’m not on TikTok, but I was sent some of the comments. Wow. We’ve got to get smarter about this.”

The journalist couldn’t be more right when it comes to the outlandish trolling Natasha O’Brien has faced.

Natasha uses her voice to make this country a safer place for victims yet is being vilified by faceless trolls online.

We need to ensure all victims feel safe to speak out and seek help but how can they do that when this is how they’re treated?

As Muireann perfectly put it, we need to stop silencing people who are using their voices to advocate for change.
