Brittany Leith was able to crawl to safety after a car crash in which the vehicle she was in flipped. She escaped the car just before 4am on Sunday night in New York. But as she attempted to return to the car, crossing three lanes of traffic, she was struck and killed.
The driver of the car failed to notice Leith or the over turned vehicle as Leith’s car had no lights. A state trooper responding to the scene used his own patrol car to block the scene. He too was struck while in his car and is being treated for non-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital.
Leith attempted to go back to the car despite warnings from those at the scene. Leith was returning from a friend’s house at the time of the accident. Her grandmother expressed her disbelief that those at the scene didn’t stop Leith from returning to her car.
“I was told someone was there to help her out of the car, but she could have hit her head and been out of it,” she said. “Somebody should have held on to her and not let her run back into the street.”
Leith is mother to one three year old child.
