Met Eireann warns of “thundery showers” this weekend

If you had major outdoor plans set for this weekend, you may want to reconsider them, as the weather forecast is in and it's not looking good. While today will be comparatively mild – bright weather, scattered showers and highs of 10 to 14 degrees – the Irish Meteorological Service has warned of thundery conditions starting tonight. "Early tonight a band of heavy showers will move into western coastal counties, with the potential for some thunderstorms and hail. It will quickly track eastwards across the country and will be followed by clear spells and isolated showers," Met Éireann's forecast reads. If you are heading out tonight, you may want to wrap up warm, as it will be "breezy" with lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees. Tomorrow, Met Éireann warn, will be a "windy and showery day", with "frequent heavy and potentially thundery showers". These will be initially localised in the west, but they will become more widespread as the day goes on. There is also a warning that "spot flooding" may occur, as it does in any heavy downpour. As well as being rainy, conditions are set to be windy with "fresh to strong south to southwest winds" developing, with "very strong gusts" at times. Temperatures will be between 9 and 13 degrees. Sunday will get off to a "mostly dry and bright start", with some isolated showers in the northwest. However, in the afternoon and the evening, heavy rain is expected, with the weather turning breezy. Next week will be drier, with "spells of sunshine" and "just a few light showers" forecast for Monday. Tuesday will bring "a good deal of dry weather with sunny spells", though some light rain and drizzle is expected in the southern part of the country.
