It was a lucky escape for children and a woman in her 70s as a pipe bomb exploded outside their Balbriggan home on Sunday morning.

The incident happened in the Hampton Green estate in North Dublin, when residents reported hearing a loud explosion from under a vehicle shortly after 3:30am.

According to The Independent, members of one of the countries most dangerous gangs are the chief suspects in the case, however no arrests have been made.

It is thought that the targets of the bomb attack are related to man who was shot dead last year.

The Herald reports that the targets were previously warned by gang members not to leave their Balbriggan home.

Gardai have been closely monitoring the activities of the gang, who have been involved in a “terrifying campaign of intimidation”.

No one was injured in the weekend’s attack and an investigation is ongoing.
