Love Island’s Demi Jones reveals thyroid cancer diagnosis

Demi urged her fans to check for lumps following her diagnosis.

Former Love Island contestant Demi Jones has told her fans that she has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. The reality star broke the news on Instagram by sharing a photo of a pamphlet called 'Understanding Thyroid Cancer'. On top of it, she wrote "Check Your Lumps". "Hi guys, I got my results today and unfortunately I have Thyroid cancer," she wrote. "The tumour has been removed but I'm now due to have more surgery to remove the rest of my Thyroid." She continued: "I'm staying very positive and I'm a strong girl so I'll be fine, thank you for your love and support always. I'll bounce back stronger." In a follow-up story, the Love Island star thanked everyone for sending well-wishes, and promised to give an update soon. Back in April, Demi Jones underwent surgery to remove a "golf ball sized lump" from her neck. She first discovered the lump in January 2019, and told fans the only reason it went ahead was because she pushed her doctors to examine it again. At the time she said: "Please don't put off lumps getting checked. If appointments keep getting cancelled then you need to chase it up. "I was supposed to have this appointment six months ago. At my scan they said 'everything looks fine' and went to send me on my way. I challenged it and asked if they could do more, in which they said, 'Oh well, we can test the fluid if you want us to?' "Thank God I asked as it was the fluid that came back potentially cancerous. Always push!" According to the Irish Cancer Society, thyroid cancer affects over 250 people in Ireland every year. It is more prevalent in women than in men, and it is more common in people over the age of 40.
