ISPCA issues warning about putting pets in costumes over the festive period

Irish animal charity, ISPCA, has released a statement in relation to dressing up your pets over the festive period. As Christmas is a time when people tend to go decoration crazy, the charity is reminding owners not to do the same when it comes to their pets. Carmel Murray from the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA) said the following:

"Not all pets will tolerate wearing costumes, and it may cause them undue stress. "Only dress up your pet for Christmas if you know they enjoy it. If you put your pet in a costume, make sure it does not limit the animal's movement, vision, ability to breathe or behave normally. "Ensure the costume doesn't have any small, chewable pieces or toxic paints or dyes."

Carmel also noted that human costumes can be equally terrifying for animals and so, to keep this in mind if dressing up this Christmas.

"Costumes on people can be equally scary to pets. People donning costume accessories may be distressing or trigger their territorial instincts."
