Following the attacks in Paris this weekend, French President Francois Hollande addressed his country, declaring the events were “waged by a terrorist army, a jihadist army, by Daesh, against France.”
French officials recently declared that they would stop using ISIS to refer to the terrorist group, and instead refer to the group as “Daesh.”
The term has now been adopted by a number of groups denouncing the actions from last weekend, with Anonymous, world governments and journalists now choosing to refer to the group as Daesh.
But according to The Mirror, the term is a serious offence to the Islamic State, with ISIS threatening severe consequences to groups who adopt the name for their organisation.
The term is an acronym for the Arabic phrase al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant), but is also associated with the Arabic words ‘Daes’ and ‘Dahes’ which translate “to trample down and crush” and to “a bigot who imposes his view on others.”
According to the Boston Globe, the terrorist group have now threatened to “cut out the tongues” of anyone who uses the term.
Those opposed to the actions of the terrorist group have now refused to use their preferred name ISIS – claiming the name validates their existence as an organisation.

ISIS is not Islamic, and it’s certainly not a state. Words matter. Call them what they are: Daesh. https://t.co/79UUWTdh3N
