According to reports, a 76-year-old man sadly drowned in St Julian's, near the Cavalieri Hotel, in St Julian’s Bay.
He got into difficulty when swimming on Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency services were alerted and rushed to the scene of the drowning shortly after 12.40 pm.
Members of the Armed Forces of Malta and Civil Protection also attended the scene.
The man was brought to shore and was given medical assistance, but he sadly passed away.
Maltese police have launched an investigation following the tragic accident.
They confirmed they will conduct an inquiry into the Irish man's tragic death.
A spokesperson for The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade told The Independent:
"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
"As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases."
