Two Indian women have designed “anti-rape” jeans in response to the attacks that have taken place in the country against women.
According to the Daily Mail, Diksha Pathak and Anjali Srivastava from Varanasi have invented jeans that can send distress signals to local police stations. An electronic device is installed in the jeans which, when pressed, will send a call to the nearest police station.
Officers can then locate the woman in question thanks to a tracker which is installed within the device.
Currently in India, a rape occurs every 22 minutes. Lawmakers are expected to press for the system to be made available nationwide after tests are carried out on the product.
“We have been thinking of making this device for a long time,’ said Pathak, a science student. “My father is often making himself ill with worry each time I am coming home late.
“These terrible gang rapes of women that we have heard so much about recently shocked me and my colleague to the very core. Hopefully no other women will have to suffer if they are wearing our clothing.”
