Households warned about the threat of cockroach infestation

This is the last thing we need at Christmas.

Homeowners are being warned about the risk of cockroaches this Christmas following a huge rise in cases of infestations. There has been a 134percent rise in cases this year in comparison to 2016, with rat infestations also increasing by 20percent during the same time frame. According to The Mirror, Colm Moore of Rentokil said:

"Cockroaches pose a clear risk to public health and we all have a responsibility to be vigilant to signs of an infestation. The common signs that can help you identify a possible cockroach infestation are, unusual smell, cockroach droppings, smear marks and shed skins.”

He also said:

"Christmas is a time of warmth and abundance and this is true for both your family and pests. With cold weather and lots of leftover food, there are plenty of ways that pests can ruin Christmas for you and your loved ones. Ensure that leftover Christmas food is stored properly in the fridge, so you don’t attract rodents. Leaving leftover food out in the open is an invitation to hungry mice and rats."

Rentokil has five tips to avoid any infestations; eliminate food source for the roaches, clear all waste food and liquid spillage, de-clutter, take preventive measures and take prompt action.
