An 11-year-old boy has died following an attack by his father. The attack happened at a cricket club training session at Tyabb, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, in front of other children and their parents.
According to the Independent, Luke Batty died at the scene following the attack. Paramedics were called out and treated the boy for massive head injuries, reportedly caused by a cricket bat. It is believed that the boy was also stabbed.
The father of the boy was shot by police in an attempt to stop the attack, he later died in hospital. It has been reported that he suffered from mental health issues.
"What triggered this was a case of his dad having mental health issues," Ms Batty, the boy's mother, told Channel Nine.
"He was in a homelessness situation for many years, his life was failing, everything was becoming worse in his life, and Luke was the only bright light in his life.
"No one loved Luke more than his father. No one loved Luke more than me - we both loved him", she said.
A police officer informed Sky News that the attack was quite brutal and the boy's injuries were "horrific."
