Eggheads panelist CJ de Mooi has made a shocking admission in his autobiography – claiming he may have killed a man who tried to mug him.
De Mooi, who appeared on and won a string of game shows before becoming a regular on the BBC quiz show, said in his book that he took on a would-be attacked in Amsterdam in 1988. According to De Mooi, the man approached him with a knife. CJ said he punched the man, then threw him in the canal – saying “He caught me on the wrong day and I just snapped.”
He added: “I fully suspect I killed him. I’ve no idea what happened to him.”
“This is the one incident of my life I do regret. I was in a phone box and this old guy, obviously a massive drug user, came up behind me with a knife in his hand.
“He told me to turn around, open my bag and give him whatever was inside.
“It was the only outburst of violence I’ve ever done. That’s one of the main reasons why I absolutely abhor all violence.”
Police in the city are now believed to be investigating the incident.
Over the weekend, De Mooi claimed that he was rejected by another BBC show, Strictly Come Dancing, because he wanted a same-sex dance partner.
Speaking to Newsbeat, he said: “I thought, as it’s now 2015, it’s time this format in Britain had a same-sex couple.”
