Developer and reality TV star Donald Trump has announced his bid for the 2016 US presidency.

The larger-than-life business magnate is seeking the Republican nomination for the already crowded race.

Trump, 69, made his declaration in the atrium of his landmark HQ Trump Tower, a luxury skyscraper on New York’s Fifth Avenue.

He said: “We need somebody that can take the brand of the United States and make it great again.”

He added that he would be “the greatest jobs president that God ever created.”

Trump has boosted his public awareness since 2003 by appearing at the helm of the US version of The Apprentice.

He has also published a series of books, including Think Like a Billionaire and Midas Touch: Why Some Entrepreneurs Get Rich — And Why Most Don’t.

Trump has never been elected to political office. During the 2012 race he made headlines by suggesting repeatedly that President Obama was born outside of the United States.
