Diageo to meet London Irish over “serious concerns” about Paddy Jackson signing

The drinks company said they had "serious concerns" about the move.

Diageo, the brand behind Guinness, have confirmed that they will meet with rugby club London Irish in order to discuss the signing of Paddy Jackson. In a statement issued on Monday, Diageo confirmed:

"We are meeting the club this week to discuss our serious concerns regarding their decision, which is not consistent with our values."

The announcement comes days after another previous sponsor of the club, Cash Converters, confirmed that they would be discontinuing their affiliation with the club. A tweet from Cash Converters read:

"As a company, we are committed to the highest possible standards when it comes to our investments in any sponsorships and collaborations. As a result of a detailed and thorough review of our support for London Irish, we have decided to discontinue our association with the club."

London Irish, however, issued a statement which read:

"The club would like to clarify that the decision to part ways at the end of 2018/19 season was made before the announcement of player signings in May 2019, and for reasons unrelated to player signings."

In April last year, Jackson's contract was revoked by Ulster and the IRFU. At the time, Jackson said:

"I am deeply disappointed about the outcome of the IRFU and Ulster Rugby's internal review. However, I recognise that my behaviour has fallen far short of the values expected of me as an international player, a role model for the game of rugby and as a son and a brother. I am truly sorry."

Afterwards, Jackson was signed by French rugby union club Perpignan. It was announced last month that Jackson had been signed by London Irish, where he is set to rejoin former Ireland head coach Declan Kidney.
