Last night the new broke that a truck had crashed into a crowd of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

While early reports suggested dozens of people had been killed, this morning it’s been confirmed that the death toll has risen to 84.

The Mayor of Nice initially broke the news tweeting, “Dear people of Nice, the driver of a truck appears to have caused tens of deaths. Stay for the moment in your home. More info to come.”

While the local police are calling it “an attack”, no further information has been released about the circumstances which led to a truck driver crashing into a crowd of people as they watched a fireworks display for Bastille Day.

The BBC report that the driver of the truck drove for 2km on the Promenade des Anglais, killing people as he went, before being shot dead by police.

There were reports of gunshots being heard in the area too last night but this has yet to be confirmed if they were separate to the police gunshots.

One eyewitness told BFM TV, “Everyone was calling run, run, run there’s an attack run, run, run. We heard some shots. We thought they were fireworks because it’s the 14th of July.

“There was great panic. We were running too because we didn’t want to stick around and we went into a hotel to get to safety.”
