A teenager has died after taking a synthetic drug at a house party in Cork.

The 18-year-old, named locally as Alex Ryan, from Millstreet, Co. Cork died in Cork University Hospital today.

He had been on a life-support machine at the hospital since the incident occurred during the week.

The alarm was raised by a passer-by at around 4am on Tuesday morning after stumbling upon a house party which appeared to have gotten out of hand.

Six men and a woman, aged from 18 to 37, were eventually rushed to Cork University Hospital, following the investigation of a possibly contaminated batch of the designer drug.

The remaining five were all discharged from hospital over the last few days.
