Police in Australia have discovered that a local chef killed and dismembered his girlfriend, before boiling parts of her body on his stove.

According to reports today, officers went to Marcus Volke’s apartment in Brisbane after they received complaints of a foul smell, said to be like “rotting meat”. It is believed that Volke attempted to flee officers by leaping over a balcony before hiding in an alleyway where it is claimed that he took his own life by slitting his throat.

The police are reported to have found Volke’s girlfriend’s body parts in a pot on the stove. It is alleged that other parts of the woman’s body were found in the garbage outside the apartment.

According to reports, the couple met when they were both working as chefs on an international cruise ship. They had only recently moved into the new apartment complex.

“You don’t think that a bad smell equals a murder,” said resident Courtney Reichart to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), adding that she had first noticed the smell on Wednesday and that by Saturday, “it made your eyes water, it made you want to be sick.”

Volke’s girlfriend has been named as 27-year-old Mayang Prasetyo.

Speaking to The Courier Mail in Australia, Volke’s mother said that he had seemed to be fine.

“He was happy and he was coming home for Christmas, everything was normal,” she said. “He’d been on a ship, going from one country to another. They hadn’t been in Brisbane for very long, only a few months. They were starting to get settled.”
