Anti-Slavery activist Harriet Tubman to appear on the $20 bill

The American Treasury Secretary has decided to replace Andrew Jackson on the 20 dollar bill.

According to AP, Jacob Lew has decided that anti-slavery leader Harriet Tubman who ferried hundreds of slaves to freedom, should replace Jackson.

Interestingly, the ten-dollar bill was also due for a redesign. This bill features the face of AlexanderHamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States and the subject of the popular Broadway musical Hamilton, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Fans of Hamilton actually protested the decision to remove him, and it seems as though their calls for justice have been heeded.

Tubman was originally slated to appear as Hamilton’s replacement on the 10 dollar bill, and although Tubman’s inclusion has been welcomed, many women’s and civil rights groups worry it will take longer for the human rights icon to appear on the notes themselves.

The back of the 10 dollar bill will however still feature some women’s stories, with a mural of the women’s suffrage movement set to replace the Treasury building on the reverse of the bill.
