An Algerian aviation official has confirmed that the Air Algerie flight which disappeared from radar this morning has crashed.
However, officials have not confirmed where the flight crashed or the status of its passenger and crew, according to RTÉ. A company source confirmed the passengers were of various nationalities.
“The plane was not far from the Algerian frontier when the crew was asked to make a detour because of poor visibility and to prevent the risk of collision with another aircraft on the Algiers-Bamako route,” the source said.
Two French fighter jets have been dispatched to attempt to find the location of the crash.
This morning, an official Algerian news agency confirmed that an Air Algerie flight from Burkina Faso to Algiers disappeared fifty minutes after take-off.
According to reports, air navigation services lost track of the plane in the early hours of this morning at 1.55am. The agency confirmed that the airline had “launched its emergency plan” in keeping with its procedures.
The Irish Times stated that the flight took off from Burkina Faso at 1.17am and was supposed to land at 5.10am but never reached its destination.
BBC News is currently reported that the flight was a chartered flight from Spanish airline, Swiftair.
