The star was reportedly found dead at his Los Angeles home on Thursday.
San Martin was born in Spain, but moved to Montana when he was a child.
He first started out as an actor when he was young working in children's theatre, and went on to work in modelling.
He then trained as an actor when he was a teenager, and got his big break in Days of Our Lives, in which he appeared from 2010 to 2011.
He was also known for his roles in the 2013 film Behind the Candelabra, TV show The Bold and the Beautiful and a role as estate manager Fabian Regalo del Cielo in Jane the Virgin.
Los Angeles County Coroner's office told Hollywood LA News that San Martin is believed to have died by suicide.
His co-stars have paid tribute, with his on-screen sister from Days of Our Lives Camila Banus taking to Instagram to share a heartfelt message.
"Pepe, what can I say but I love you and rest in peace, my friend. Love you mucho mucho mucho. I wish I had told you more," she wrote.
