A 21-year-old woman has died from a clot on her lung, reportedly caused by taking the contraceptive pill.
Teaching assistant Fallan Kurek was taken to Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, when she collapsed at her home. She was pronounced dead after three days in intensive care.
Her parents told the Birmingham Mail that doctors told them the pulmonary embolism was caused by the contraceptive pill.
According to the publication Fallan had been prescribed Rigevidon in order to regulate her periods.
After three weeks, she started to suffer from breathlessness as well as pains in her legs and ribs. After a supposed panic attack, her parents took her to hospital.
She was given an electrocardiogram before being told it was most likely a bruised sternum and sent home to take some painkillers.
Four days later, despite feeling a bit better, she collapsed on the stairs. Paramedics rushed her to hospital where she was put on an emergency ventilator.
A scan later revealed that Fallan had a large clot on her lung which was causing the right side of her heart to become inflamed. An inquest into her death will be conducted in due course.
Speaking about the tragedy, Fallan’s mother Julia said: “Fallan was looking forward to the rest of her life… We just don’t want any other family to go through this.”
She is hoping that by sharing her daughter’s story, they can raise awareness about the potentially fatal symptoms of blood clots and taking the pill.
