Move over the Clancys, the Ó hAilpíns, and the Jedwards. Cork’s O’Donovan lads are Ireland’s new favourite brothers.
Paul and Gary O’Donovan are also the new heroes of the Rio Olympics after winning a silver medal in a brilliant show in the men’s lightweight double sculls final.
We’ve quickly grown accustomed to the two Skibbereen boys’ grounded, deadpan – one might say “pure Cork” – style in their media interviews.
It shouldn’t come as any surprise that their immediate response to winning silver on Friday was also typically hilarious.
JOE reporter Joe Harrington was in Rio on the day to capture these scenes right after the lads won. And true to form, they’re something special.
The O'Donovans just came back out for the craic. The 🇮🇪 flag flying high in the air 😂 Two brilliant men #Rio2016 pic.twitter.com/Kk73PYxDk5

The two boys just jumped back on their boat and took a victory lap, while the Irish spectators went absolutely bananas for them, breaking into the customary chants of “Olé, Olé, Olé”.
What a pair of legends.
The guys’ undoubted star power hasn’t been lost on the international media either.
Their interview on the BBC was absolutely priceless too.
People took to Twitter to giggle at the brothers, who have delighted us with their quips for the entirety of the Rio Olympics.
O’Donovan brothers before starting their BBC interview – “We’ll have to be careful with what we say to these lads”.
