Journalist Stella Young is tired of having people telling her that she’s an “inspiration” for doing things like getting up in the morning – just because she’s in a wheelchair.
Born in Stawell in Western Victoria, Australia, Young is a disability advocate and editor of Ramp Up and has been active in the disability community for years.
“I’m not your inspiration, thank you very much” is a thought-provoking and funny speech that Young gave at TEDXSydney, where she describes how we have a tendency to turn people with disabilities into “inspiration porn”.
