A 75-year-old man has surprised his ex-wife with a public proposal, 40 years after their divorce.
Renate Stumpf and Louis Demetriades originally met at an army base in 1959 and we married for 12 years, before deciding to split and going on to marry other partners.
“We had little financial support, I didn’t know anything and I could barely speak English. We started arguing about every little thing,” said Renate.
According to the Huffington Post, the pair didn’t speak for over 40 years but reconnected in December before falling in love all over again.
“When we saw each other again last December, we knew right then we still loved each other for sure. That love has never passed,” she said.
Louis decided to propose for second time and popped the question on Valentine’s Day by surprising Renate while she was working at Walmart, carrying a sign saying ‘Happy Valentine’s Day! Will you marry me?’.
Renate replied: “Yes, but not today!”
“43 years is a long time to say ‘yes’ right away. I’m going to have to test him a little bit first! I will marry him though, because he’s a good man.”
