It may be our favourite chocolate spread to eat with a spoon (has anyone actually risked putting it on bread?!), but there’s a new national alert.
Nutella may soon be too expensive to afford a jar of the nutty chocolate dream.
Hazel flower fields in Turkey have been left battered by bad weather this year, and seeing as they harvest 70% of the world’s hazelnut population, this could mean serious trouble.
Ferrero, the company behind Ferrero Rocher and Nutella, currently use 25% of the world’s hazelnut supply for their produce, but have seen the cost raise dramatically.
In February the company reported the cost of hazelnut at £4,000 per tonne and now producers face a cost of £7,000 per tonne for the nut ingredient.
We don’t know about you, but we’re about to start storing Nutella in a bunker… just in case.
