Comparing the results from the flight attendants and sending samples to Auburn University, E.coli levels were tracked for each area.
So what’s the number one offender for the most disgusting place you’re likely to come into contact with on a plane?
You might want to keep your limbs to yourself… the armrest is the dirtiest place on a plane, with levels of the E.coli bug lasting up to four days in the fabric.
This is compared to the bug lasting just 48 hours on toilet door handles due to the materials used to manufacture the fittings.
The armrest is followed closely by the tray table.
As well as poor hygiene, the tray tables can often be used to change nappies on a flight.
One flight attendant even warns passengers not to walk barefoot or take their shoes off on the flight:
“I have seen passengers even urinate in the seats. The carpets are filthy and the toilet floors are worse.
“I would always encourage passengers to use a sanitising spray on their hands after using the loo and never walk barefoot around the cabin.”
Suddenly, we’re thinking of investing in disposable onesies for our next flight.
