Think that first legal ID was the turning point in adulthood? Or maybe it was sitting in your first lecture in college?
Well apparently, you were very wrong.
According to new research most people only turn into adults in their mid-twenties.
Professor Luna from the Pittsburgh School of Medicine has found that people in their 20s could be defined as ‘kidults’ because they haven’t gotten over many of their adolescent phases.
So those people you’re meeting out on a Saturday night might seem the perfect choice to settle down with, but the chances are they could be harbouring some secret desires to pack a bag and start some travelling…
Researchers began examining the old guidelines for defining adulthood, including the desire to leave home and fend for ourselves. The results found that where this originally occurred when we were 15, the times they are a-changing.
Blame it on comfier houses, home-cooked meals, or the general cost of renting but Professor Luna claims this need to sense out a new life for ourselves is dwindling, and we’re not hitting the new phase of adulthood until we reach our mid-twenties or even early thirties.
So what are the new first signs of adulthood? Apparently it’s shouldering some serious responsibility – like holding down a job, paying a mortgage or raising a family.
