Yasutaro Koide, born in 1903, has passed away in Japan aged 112.

Yasutaro died just two months short of his 113th birthday.

The former tailor said the secret to his long life was not to smoke, drink or overdo it.

In August, Yasutaro the  was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the oldest living man in the world. The world’s oldest person is an American woman, 116-year-old Susannah Mushatt Jones of Brooklyn, New York.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported that he died early Tuesday at a hospital in Nagoya, central Japan. He had been treated for heart problems.

Masamitsu Yoshida now succeeds Koide as the oldest living man. The 111-year-old is a Tokyo native.
