It’s like the Marmite of the social networking world, we either love it or we hate it, some of us love to hate it and others of us hate to love it.
It’s Facebook, host of the homepage where you can instantly see everything your “friends” are doing at that given time.
We put “friends” in quotation marks because we came to realise we don’t actually know a lot of the people we are friends with on Facebook, how many people have we added as a “friend” just because we had a “really good” deep and meaningful conversation with them in the nightclub bathroom the night before?
Oh, there’s more to come, don’t worry! Here are the 15 things people do on Facebook that really grind our gears. Feel free to add your own in the comments below…
1. When people take Instagram photos of their food.
We don’t need to know everything you eat, especially when your gourmet baked courgette pie doesn’t quite add up to the takeaway we’re munching down on. And also, Instagram makes everything look good so your gourmet pie mightn’t even be that tasty…
2. When people do the “tea-pot” pose, and others.
Oh, how it grinds our gears… Hand on hip, head cocked to side, pouty face, “oh, you just caught me on camera?!”. Put it away guys, just a simple smile does wonders for any photo. Other poses include the “duck-face”, “tongue stick-out” and the omniscient “camera held two feet above face”.
3. When people send personal messages, from one love to another.
Keep it for the bedroom guys… Lip-kissed sticky notes and “love you” messages clogging up our feeds does nothing for our patience!
4. When people write “cryptic” statuses.
People may think they are being cryptic by writing “I hate it when someone spreads your secret” or “I hate it when people complain about the way I make tea”, but to be honest, that person probably knows it’s them, and any other friends you have will put two and two together too. It’s not being cryptic, you might as well write their name up and save us wondering who it is.
5. When people share their emotions.
It’s the short ones that kill us, “I’m bored” or “I’m sad”. Well, get up and do something about it then!
6. When people think they are a political activist for liking a photo or status.
One word: Kony. It seemed every Facebook user in Ireland was on their way over to Africa to catch the criminal… until we realised, no, they were just sitting on their couch at home liking statuses and photos.
7. When people share too many details of their love life.
Statuses detailing what you’re doing with a loved one or how your said loved one won’t push over in the bed make us feel queasy to be quite honest.
8. When people go tagging-mad in self-portraits.
There are some people’s bedrooms we could draw in our sleep we’ve seen them so many times on Facebook. We’re actually wondering if there is some sort automatic camera that captures them doing their “tea-pots” as they leave their room…
9. When people tag their body-parts in a holiday photo.
A photo of the pool on holidays is fair enough, but there is no need to have the end of your stomach, legs and feet in it too to tag yourself. You took the photo, you were there, we get it.
10. When people think they’re breaking news.
The friends who post up “OMG WHITNEY’S DEAD!” or “Victoria wants another baby” as if the celebrities personally texted them about the news before E! News, TMZ or Her.ie even heard of it…
11. When people share the emotional image photos.
The kind where there is a picture of a sunset, a couple holding hands, a dog looking up at them and a caption that reads, “People’s prejudice cannot see the things that are, because it’s always looking for the things that aren’t”. Enough said.
12. When people check in everywhere they go.
It’s okay to check in when you’re in ‘Thailand’, at a new movie or something special, but there is no need to check into every supermarket, shop, park and car you happen to find yourself in. Two reasons; one, it shows you can’t be having that much fun to say you had time to check yourself in and two, you’re becoming a stalker’s dream.
13. When people are constantly at the top of the news feed.
You need to be street-wise when it comes to Facebook. Of course you can creep on photos, put up a few statuses and share a photo or two, but there is no need to be at the top of the newsfeed every time someone refreshes. It doesn’t look cool.
14. When people over-use hash-tags on Facebook.
Hash-tags can be used quite humorously. One or two can be funny, although we realise they are completely unnecessary on Facebook. A photo captioned “#me #and #my #buddies #at #the #beach #summertime” is completely pushing all boundaries though.
15. When people add friends they don’t say hi to.
We’re talking about the friend request you receive and you have to think about it. The moment of realisation dawns on you. That girl! I played against her in camogie once before my Junior Cert, sometimes I see her now but we don’t really say hello to each other. There’s only one reason she’s adding you and that’s for the creep-avoid at all costs!
