For some of us a trip to the cinema is about so much more than a gripping plot or loveable set of characters. It’s about sitting back and watching the beautiful people wearing their beautiful clothes. The most beautiful clothes on the planet.
And for us, we’ll always and ever remember a fashion movie moment before any plot twist or piece of dialogue. It’s just the way we’re built. For instance, how many of you remember Keira Knightley in her green dress in that library scene? Anyone?
Read on to see our pick of ten of the most stylish films ever made. Has your favourite made the cut?
1. Legally Blonde (2001)
“Whoever said orange was the new pink is seriously disturbed.” The utterly charming Elle Woods taught us many life lessons, but her bold approach to style sits up there at the top of the list. And the powerful influence of her fabulous pink wardrobe can still be felt on the catwalks 14 years after she graduated from Harvard Law School. Go pink or go home, we say.
2. The Great Gatsby (2013)
Have the roaring 20’s ever looked so well? Carey Mulligan’s superb turn as the whimsical Daisy Buchanan is one of the most fashionable big-screen performances of the last ten years. The jewels, the gowns, the flapper perfection. Just gorgeous. We could watch her float across the screen all day.
3. Funny Face (1957)
This is a must-have DVD for any die-hard fashionista out there. Funny Face is like watching one long fashion show. The plot isn’t the strongest, but that’s not what we’re interested in here. A couple of hours of watching Audrey Hepburn donning all manner of gorgeous Givenchy gowns in stunning Paris locations. What more could you want?
4. Gone With The Wind (1939)
76 years after this timeless classic hit the big screen, we still can’t get enough of of our favourite Southern belle and her epic fashion moments. Portrayed by acting powerhouse Vivien Leigh, there are so many show-stoppers in this film. From the iconic velvet green dress to her stunning red gown, Scarlett O’Hara will always be the ultimate silver screen style queen.
5. Clueless
The movie that spawned a million 90’s Hallowe’en costumes. The ever-so-loveable Cher may have been clueless when it came to affairs of the heart, but her fashion game was always on point. Seriously on point. From her famous Calvin Klein body-hugging white dress to her ‘most capable driving outfit,’ every scene of this classic flick offered up another game-changing outfit. We could watch this over and over again.
6. Pretty Woman (1990)
“Big mistake. Huge.” Everyone’s favourite Rodeo Drive shopping spree marked the beginning of Vivian’s rise to fashion stardom. 25 years on (we can’t believe it either), each of her outfits looks better than ever. From the moment Richard Gere sees her in all her beauty in that drop-dead gorgeous LBD, to that diamond necklace, falling in love on screen has never looked or felt so good to watch.
7. Zoolander (2001)
“There has got to be more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good-looking.” Has there really, Derek? We’re not sure about that. The film that brought us blue steel has more than its fair share of memorable fashion moment. The only film more stylish than Zoolander? We can only imagine that it’ll be Zoolander 2, where we’ll have major style statements like this to look forward to:
8. Sex and the City (2008)
“They say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style.” Sex and The City was the most eagerly anticipated film of the last ten years for fashionistas all of the world. And it didn’t disappoint. The big screen extravaganza brought us 81 looks for Carrie alone, and each one was more fabulous than the next. Costume designer Pat Field’s genius is sure to last the test of time in the stylish flick.
9. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
The most fabulous movie wardrobe-makeover of our time. Anna Hathaway rocked one ultra-glam outfit after another under the watchful eye of the inimitable Meryl Streep throughout this film. From those head-turning coats as she strutted through the streets of New York, to her couture fashion peak in Chanel at Paris Fashion Week, Andy Sachs transformed into a true fashionista before our very eyes. And we can’t get enough of it.
10. The Talented Mr Ripley (1999)
Gwyneth, Jude and Matt. This painfully stylish trio served up some incredibly chic fashion moments in this brilliant film. Each of three characters showed off their sartorial prowess as they plotted through 1950’s Italy with effortless style. Take us to Italy now.
