A student was refused entry to her school’s Sweethearts Dance, because she didn’t have a date on the night.
Josee Stetich had plans to attend her school dance at Utah’s Bountiful High School with two of her friends, but they were stopped at the doors.
The school decided that Josee’s friends Mikayla Robertson and Shivani Lindmeir could attend the dance as a couple, but Stetich was refused entry… as she wasn’t going in as part of a pair.
According to ABC News, Steitch offered to pay for a couple’s ticket so she could attend the dance but the school authorities wouldn’t bend on the rule.
Speaking to the news outlet, friend Mikayla explained:
“They told us Josee needed a date, be it a guy or another friend. They said the ‘Sweethearts Dance’ was different from other school dances called stomps because it was couples-only.”
When the school wouldn’t compromise, the two friends returned their tickets in solidarity:
“They refunded Shivani’s and my ticket, and they lost around $50 because they wouldn’t let us three in.
“I thought it was ridiculous. It’s silly that you can’t come by yourself if you’re not asked to a dance.”
