Galway, You Little Beauty: Check Out This Gorgeous Shot Of The Northern Lights

Taking a trip to Iceland to experience the Aurora Borealis has long been on our travel wish-list, but it turns out we could have just headed wesht to Galway this week instead. Over the past couple of days, our social media feeds have been lighting up with stunning shots of the Northern Lights from around the country, but we’ve found one little gem that stands out from the rest. This beautiful shot was captured in the early hours of Thursday morning (8^th October) at Kilmacduagh, just outside of Gort in South Galway. Photo credit: Brendan Quinn. We spoke to the photographer, Brendan Quinn, who told us the photo was two years in the planning: "My 14 year old came out with me to see it, and was amazed to see it with a naked eye. It was only when we got home we realised all the shots we took when messing around were bathed in a red glow, and there was a bright green "dome" in the background." Pictured is Kilmacdaugh, Ireland’s answer to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, fondly known as the ‘Leaning Tower of Gort.’ Dating back to the seventh century, Kilmacdaugh is Ireland’s highest Round Tower, and one of the many ancient hidden gems you'll find dotted throughout the Burren.
