So it’s never going to be as big as the Harry Potter film franchise but JK Rowling’s new book is destined for the small screen.

According to reports The Casual Vacancy, which hit the shelves back in September, will be turned into a television drama.

The BBC has commissioned the novel which is based around a local council election and is Rowling’s first book for adults.

JK Rowling seems to have a talent for writing books for the screen.

Speaking about it, the best-selling author said: “I’m thrilled that the BBC has commissioned The Casual Vacancy.

“I always felt that, if it were to be adapted, this novel was best suited to television and I think the BBC is the perfect home.”

She also brought us Harry Potter which made it onto the big screen.

And she’s not the only one who is excited about the project which looks set to appear in 2014. BBC drama controller Ben Stephenson also spoke out about it.

“It’s a book of such richness that through humour, social commentary and above all fantastic characters, says something insightful and entertaining about the country we live in,” he said.

While it doesn’t quite have the same ring to it as a wizard and his friends battling against a Dark Lord in a world of flying cars and screaming letters, it still sounds reasonably interesting!
