We all know it’s important to check your privacy settings on Facebook, but it’s not just your potential employers who may be rooting through your holiday snaps.

In a message posted to the official Facebook Security page, the company says it now plans to begin informing users if their account “has been targeted or compromised by an attacker suspected of working on behalf of a nation-state.”

The new warning will appear as a message box on your profile, warning you to increase security settings:

In a statement released by the social networking giant, Facebook’s chief security officer, Alex Stamos, wrote:

“While we have always taken steps to secure accounts that we believe to have been compromised, we decided to show this additional warning if we have a strong suspicion that an attack could be government-sponsored.

“We do this because these types of attacks tend to be more advanced and dangerous than others, and we strongly encourage affected people to take the actions necessary to secure all of their online accounts.”

The company said they will only take warning actions “in situations where the evidence strongly supports our conclusion.”

Users are advised to turn on their login approvals, which will notify them if their account has been accessed from an irregular computer or IP address.
