“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
It’s a maxim that applies to most of us on a fairly regular basis, but never, it seems, to the brains behind our social networking tools.
You have to hand it to Facebook – Zuckerberg and co have managed to hold on to their global community a lot longer than many analysts would have predicted. That community is down in no small part to their constant focus on innovation and development, leading to the rollout of new tools and features.
Not every feature, however, proves popular.
After years of testing, Facebook this week launched it’s latest tool – On This Day.
Designed to help you automatically celebrate important memories, On This Day works to take personal information logged on the site, such as wedding anniversaries and birthdays, and hosts your Facebook memories of the day on a dedicated page linked to your account. The page will also include reminders of posts you were tagged in, leading to fears of that forgotten drunken girls’ weekend in Newcastle or that soppy post an ex tagged you in coming back to haunt you.
According to Mashable, there is no way to opt out of the feature but Facebook “has confirmed that an algorithm will work to filter out potentially unpleasant memories, such as posts from people you’ve broken up with and memorialized pages”.
Like all features, On This Day will be rolled out gradually over the coming days. You may not be able to see yours just yet, but when it does become available you’ll find it at facebook.com/onthisday.
